Canadian metallers SENATE have issued the following update:

"Pat (drums) returned from a two-month run with DESPISED ICON filling in for Alex on the drums, and we managed to squeeze in a show with BENEATH THE MASSACRE a couple days afterwards. The main business however is that we've been writing and demoing tunes for our next record! We're nearly half a dozen tunes in, and we have lots more ideas that just need to be arranged and recorded and I would say that things are progressing very well.

"As far as the tunes go, they are all quite different from each other, and quite different from the 'Scenekill' record. Some are longer and more technical, a couple are shorter and more aggressive and a couple ideas are coming out very melodic, so it looks like it's gonna be a much more diverse and interesting outing this time.

"Some of the new titles are: 'Everyone's A Christian On Their Deathbed', 'Sympathy For The Insects', 'The Whore', 'Vices' and 'Speak Through Me'.

"We're aiming to do some in studio pre-production in late March/early April so you'll get a chance to hear some new ideas around then."

SENATE's debut album, "The Great Northern Scenekill", was recorded at Silo Studios in Hamilton, Ontario with producer Julius "Juice" Butty (ALEXISONFIRE, PROTEST THE HERO).

Beneath the Massacre / Nephelium / Starring Janet Leigh / Senate
The Casbah, Hamilton ON January 9

By Sean Palmerston

A Wednesday night in early January is not exactly ideal timing for a metal show in the Hammer, but this proved to be much better than anticipated. Having impressed many with their Great Northern Scenekill debut, locals Senate have become an even more formidable live unit since the addition of ace bassist Colin Lernell. Despite not practicing together for nearly three months, the quintet definitely won over the crowd with their Swedish death metal style. Toronto tech-core quintet Starring Janet Leigh had a tougher time. While their MySpace page shows an abundance of great ideas, the translation to the stage isn't quite there yet, though vocalist Matt Nimmo's vocal range was definitely impressive. Toronto's Nephelium made their Hamilton debut next, but unfortunately due to an incredibly long set-up and an overzealous sound guy, they played to about half the audience they should have. About four songs in, vocalist Boyan Guerdjikov asked where everybody went, and had he been standing in the crowd, he'd have realised they were all outside trying to save their hearing for the headliners. It was an unfortunate oversight since the band did a smashing job playing primal death metal reminiscent of both Suffocation and Decapitated. It is amazing what a year has done for the musical maturation of Montreal's Beneath the Massacre. In 2006, they were an admirable, if somewhat tepid band that didn't have the chops to pull off their studio material onstage, but fast-forward 14 months and that same band have turned into a ferocious beast, able to hold their own with the most technical metal bands around. Concentrating on their Mechanics of Dysfunction full-length, the quartet ripped through a blistering set that proved they are on their way up. Vocalist Elliot Desgagnes has turned into an excellent front-man and the band were razor-sharp throughout. The last year on the road has

Review of The Great Northern Scenekill from Exclaim! Magazine!

Senate
The Great Northern Scenekill

It is a rare feat for a band to release a record that sounds this good, not only musically but especially production-wise, without the connections and cash that come with signing to a label. With members from Threat Signal and Martyr, and hailing from both Ontario and Quebec, the hidden gem that is The Great Northern Scenekill offers an invigorating twist in the ever-eclectic Canadian underground. Senate draw influence from the European melody meets thrash stylising of bands like Darkane but incorporate a distinct North American edge along the lines of the Black Dahlia Murder, without the pseudo-black metal and tendency towards generics. Though some songs are needlessly long, the repetition isn’t mind numbing simply because it offers you another chance to absorb the awesome. Having already attracted a decent amount of hype from Canadian metal magazines, as well as a good deal of attention on their myspace page, it’s only a matter of time before they take their place alongside Canada’s other world class metal acts.
